Candlish has a way of dropping hints that the reader completely overlooks. But as each twist is revealed, the hints add up and make you realize you probably should have been able to tell what was going on the whole time. That is how you begin to empathize with the characters.
When the same things that fooled them, fool you as well. Candlish is truly a master of crafting a carefully constructed plot that showcases how easy it is to be tricked into your worst nightmare. We sleep hear from the husband in alternating chapters. Twist after twist. One would expect this to be a quick moving story, but I found it anything but. I felt it dragged, read extremely slow. Plus, hearing the story from both viewpoints created much unwelcome repetition. I appreciate how this story was put together, not sure if it was particularly realistic but the twists were entertaining and clever.
Never felt any affiinity to the characters either, so I ended up thinking this was good, okay, but not more. This was a sisters read, one in which we had various responses. ARC from Edelweiss. Fiona begins to realize what a mistake she has made in suggesting this arrangement as the day progresses and she is unable to reach Bram or locate their children.
Fiona struggles to find a solution as she faces the impending loss of her home and family. Spoilers ahead blah blah. This was really good, like there was maybe one whole complaint I had about this one and that was it.
This was definitely 4. I was so engrossed through out, and honestly it really roped me in the way things escalated. Like it was just driving violations and the next thing you know Bram is committing fraud and laundering money. It also felt pretty believable and I have to say even though Bram had his faults I felt so bad for him through out. The way he just kept getting more boxed into the situation, I know he has created the situation, but it was still quite depressing especially knowing that in the end he ends up killing himself.
The whole plot was just amazing the way it unfolded and the twists and everything managed to stay believable at the same time. I also appreciate the sad but hopeful note at the end. Now the one thing that peeved me, the fact that it gets revealed that Merle is the one Bram slept with because it didn't feel foreshadowed.
I'm mostly confused because I thought at one point in the book the women from HR comes to talk to him and tell him she's pregnant but now I'm thinking it clearly must have been Merle, unless he knocked them both up, and I just misread it. That just threw the whole thing off kilter because I wasn't even wondering who it had been and I had attributed the pregnancy as being with the women he slept with after the separation.
I just felt taken aback and it was probably all my fault I just missed any foreshadowing. Anyway definitely one of the best things I've read so far this year, unfortunately the list of things I have read is small this year because I have to go be responsible and all that bullshit. I'll be back when I finally read a few more books to write reviews but definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for their next read.

Though I felt that it stretched the realm of believability, I was intrigued enough to keep reading and boy was there a payoff! The ending was like shazam! A buddy read with Kaceey, so happy we read this together! Published on Edelweiss and Goodreads on 7. View all 50 comments. Not very believable but I was good with it. No spoilers here. Add to that the fact that you are going back and forth in time. I got irritated with the book at times. The main characters Fi and Bram Lawson are quite unlikable.
Fi seems to have a very superior, selfish attitude about most things and Bram is just a loser and a cheater. There is another very sad, very important story going on at the same time. A mother and her young daughter are in an auto accident, they were blindsided and slammed into a tree. What I liked about the book the up and down, in and out, twisty, turning nature of the plot.
That bumped the book up to a solid 4, just the last 25 pages were pretty amazing. All together I would recommend this book, this is a very intelligent read with lots to try and figure out.

Is there a genre that crosses chick-lit with light domestic suspense?
That's the word I'm searching for here. Also, I would point you to any of the Mary Kubica or B. Paris novels. But for me? I'm always looking for dark, dangerous and truly suspenseful plot lines. I love layered characters with personality disorders. I love mood. I'm weird like that. So, I don't like this book. Louise Candlish is a gifted writer and she did draw me into the book immediately.
And then, the story never goes anywhere! So much talking, talking, talking. Sorry to report this. The cover is beautiful and Candlish has many fans already. I realize my opinions are on the jaded side and I accept this book is not for me. It might be perfect for you, so don't pay attention to my ramblings All opinions are obviously my own. I was hooked after the first chapter, and I could feel the tension jumping off the page.
I thought it was a brilliant premise. Fiona pulls up to her house to find a moving van parked out front and strangers moving in! Just the thought of that is enough to make my heart race. Fiona will tell her story through a crime podcast and her husband, Bram tells his side through a typed word document. I really did enjoy both characters. A wonderful, detailed plot and a g Man, I wanted to love this book more. A wonderful, detailed plot and a good twist was not enough to keep the story from drowning in a repetitive narrative and somewhat tedious pace.
Fingers crossed! Jess Harris I've tried so hard to keep going but it's just dragging! I'm on page Do you know if that's near the big event?? I've never given up on Miranda be I've tried so hard to keep going but it's just dragging!
I've never given up on Miranda before. Such a beautiful suburban area, with lake access, a pool and lovely homes set in a group! Harper has lived here for quite a while, she works at the nearby University, others in this subdivision work there also.
It was a wonderful place to live, and everyone knew their neighbors. But did they really????? Harper went to investigate and found Brandon and Fiona Truett dead, killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. Apparently someone left the car running in the garage, the poisonous gas easily seeping into the house and killing the Truetts. Ruby Fletcher was convicted of the murders. All of the neighbors testified at her trial, but were they all telling the truth?? Harper had heard Ruby come in a little after 2 a.
She finally got a new lawyer and found herself finally freed, presumed innocent!! Harper and the neighbors are shocked to see Ruby come back into their neighborhood. But Ruby is back for revenge, or is there more to it than that??? Does she know something else about what happened that night?? There is a lot going on in his quiet neighborhood, if you look deeper under the rosy personas that the characters present to each other.
Things get pretty twisty, turny at this point and it was a fun ride. Except for the slow beginning I enjoyed this read a lot!! I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through Edelweiss. All the stars for this book that is just oozing with suspense and secrets! Until a little over a year ago, when The Truetts, a married couple, were found murdered in their house. Next door neighbor Ruby Fletcher was convicted of the murder. Present Day: Harper Nash and the rest of the community try to move on as best as possible. Unfortunately, none of them can sell their homes for profit with the murder still fresh in minds.
Harper actually lived with Ruby, next door to the Truetts. With uncomfortably thick tension in the air, suspicious activity starts trending upward in the subdivision. It appears that some neighbors were hiding secrets about the night of the murder.
Is there any chance Ruby is innocent of the crime? And if so, who is the real murderer? Does anybody really know their neighbors? Such A Quiet Place had me hooked from the first page. The characters are all easy to keep track of, and it gives off locked room mystery vibes at times.
I could imagine the sweltering heat of the summer, as well as the deceivingly quiet nights as the neighbors made their rounds for Neighborhood Watch. The book also touches on mob mentality, which I always find interesting and alarming. I suspected each neighbor of wrongdoing at one point or another, and ended up being pleasantly surprised by at least one aspect of the ending.

I don't typically write my reviews immediately upon finishing a book, but I feel like this story warrants immediate documentation before I forget everything flying through my brain. Overall, I had a really positive reaction to this story, and the compulsive readability of Such a Quiet Place is real, folks. Imagine if Desperate Housewives was set in Souther I don't typically write my reviews immediately upon finishing a book, but I feel like this story warrants immediate documentation before I forget everything flying through my brain.
Imagine if Desperate Housewives was set in Southern Virginia and almost everyone in the neighborhood worked for the same community college, and you'll have an accurate view of the vibe this story gives off. I am a sucker for stories featuring neighborhood drama, and when you throw in a murder mystery?
Just let me grab my floaties and my marg and I'll be there in a jiffy. One of the strongest positives of this book is the growing sense of dread that the author has created within the chapters. Miranda has a knack for spinning her tales across "days", and I really enjoy this format of unraveling the twisted web of her mysteries. The setting with many neighbors on a beautiful lake with a small forest was perfection, and the daily interactions between these frenemies really ramped up the intensity over the course of the book.
I did not have the ending completely figured out, which was also a nice bonus, although I do have some thoughts on this below. On a scale of entertainment, I truly wanted to give this one 5 stars, but there were so many plot holes and side stories that were never resolved that I just couldn't do it. Specifics will be in spoiler tags: Questions and concerns I was left with: view spoiler [-Why were the discussions surrounding Harper's brother included in the story?
We never find out what he actually did, unless my ARC was missing this information and it was added in at a later time. Was the entire purpose of his inclusion just to set up the minor twist at the end regarding Harper sending in the homeowner's discussion board posts? While I can believe there have been many instances of people forgetting to turn off their car and then succumbing, based on the location of their bedroom directly over the garage and the "distraction" of the moment, I just couldn't accept it.
I do understand that this is somewhat the entire point of this story, but so many issues escalated to MURDER simply because these people decided not to mention things to each other, at all, even when they see each other and talk to each other all day every day. The one time she is supposed to show up she just There isn't a single person I felt I could root for, which did hinder me from fully connecting to the story.
This was more a case of a train wreck that you can't turn away from. There's no doubt in my mind that Megan Miranda can write, and I still fan girl over All the Missing Girls and love discussing it with anyone who will listen, but this wasn't my favorite book from the author. Said in my best Jack Nicholson voice The knife clatters to the floor! There was no time to prepare. Because the neighbors have learned how to work together and cover evidence-the truth is not always told. And, Ruby, who claims she is innocent-wants to make sure that someone is going to pay I have to admit I never requested another until the book description of this one intrigued me, and I read a couple of positive early reviews… I am SO glad that I decided to give the author a second chance!

Ruby has returned to the scene of the crime. Her conviction has been overturned. I loved the private and idyllic neighborhood setting. This is a close community that feels safe until Ruby shows up unexpectedly. The neighbors get together and like a team, they form a cohesiveness and pledge to not let Ruby upset the apple cart. No one wants to be her next victim! I could feel the tension and turned the pages quickly. The slow unraveling of secrets, the trails left behind, all led to an unpredi Ruby has returned to the scene of the crime.
The slow unraveling of secrets, the trails left behind, all led to an unpredictable, well paced mystery with a few dark secrets lurking in some closets. Overall, a nice mystery suspense read to while away the hours.
Thanks to NG and the publisher for my advanced review copy. OUT on July 13, View all 79 comments. Happy release day! A great fit for thriller cravings in the middle of July!
But I could not find anything about the characters perceptible to differentiate them from each other. Most of them were so dull, boring , ordinary. They were too boring, suffering from lack of intelligence or charisma to be killer. Now her conviction is overturned and her so called lovely neighbors testified against her to put her behind the bars! But surprise, surprise: Ruby is back! And she is so determined to avenge, making pay someone who tries to put blame on her!
Slowly Ruby starts to occupy her place to trap Harper in her own place by wearing her clothes, driving her car, spending her money. She starts getting threatening notes, feeling like someone is always watching her. Could Ruby tell her the truth from the beginning? Could someone in the neighborhood be involved in the killings of Truett family? It seems like entire neighborhood imagined themselves as judges, juries and prosecutors of the community but giving the power to the wrongful hands may turn them into monsters or murderers.
Overall: the storyline was creative and the conclusion was semi satisfying but characterization was a little weak, storytelling is a little monotone and perpetrator is foreseeable! View all 6 comments.
